Buy a new Lincoln Mig, with the tank, around $600. (Argh!) but it doesn't leave any slag, and pratically makes an expert out of anybody. I'd buy a used stick welder for the ocassional thicker stuff that the mig cannot handle, as not too much goes wrong with a stick welder (you can see it work before you buy too) You may have to change a grip or ground.
One last hint, keep a few pieces of Copper plate/ blocks around (get them at a scrap yard) clean them up and coat them with the MIG no stick. This is then used behing thin metal, or filling holes, the mig won't stick to the Copper, and you successfully weld the hole or thin metal without burn through. Can't do that with an Arc welder!
