To remove the short shaft, all you should have to do is remove the driveshaft yoke, then take out the seal in the extention housing. That gives access to the snapring for that bearing. At least that's what my 78 shop manual says. Also, it says that you don't need to remove that snapring to take off the shhort housing. Just remove the bolts that hold it to the tranny case, tap it with a rubber hammer, and slide it off, being careful of the park lock. Hope this clears things up for you!
