There are Epoxy primers which can be brushed on, but I haven't done much research on them, since I try to avoid paint fumes- I completely disassemble all my projects, do the welding, and give the paint man sand-blasted, ready to paint pieces. I don't know if the stuff I am going to use (DP) is brushable, but I imagine it is. The problem is it is very expensive, and the pot life is short, so you better have a case of beer and friends eager to paint if you apply it with brush. I know there are some good ones, and there are some which are specifically made for hand-painting pitted metal to fill in some of the pits, but I haven't looked too hard for them. I have only heard anecdotal references to them from people I have talked to (who I trust are fairly scientific about their observations), but the reports were glowing- One guy painted a REAL rusty tractor frame, complete with pits, and I couldn't tell that it had pits under the paint. Another guy hand painted an obstacle in his yard which his crew constantly 'checked' with tail gates, fenders, etc. Lots of scratches, but that paint was tough, and lasted 8 years out doors.
I'd be interested to hear from anybody else about this.
