Think of the engagement lever/knob (at the winch) as a safety. Actual winch operation will occur inside the cab with the PTO lever (in/out) and the engine clutch. 1. for free wheeling cable out...disengage the outside lever at the winch and pull the cable out. 2. once the desired length of cable is out then engage at the winch, get in the truck, and "spool in" from inside the cab using the PTO lever. Many trucks have the winch lever stuck in the locked position and work fine except when wanting to "free spool". Caution in the form of a PTO lever lock should be used to prevent accidental engagement of the PTO resulting in the winch operating when NOT expecting it to. This either gives a birds nest of cable or the worm gear drives itself out through the saftey brake. One of the best uses of the winch disengagement is that it permits the PTO to be used along with a rear drive unit while NOT using the front winch. Hope this helps.
