88760123 which if you rememebr ended up making it a 1949, not a 1948.

This is the correct number to use on your title, as it is both stamped in the frame, and on the tag on the door jamb.

4312-12489 is you body number, and is only used to show what cab was put on your truck, this is not a VIN number.

The engine number can be used as a VIN in some states, but I would not do that unless you did not have a VIN number (which you do).

What kind of search was the cop trying to do?

If he was trying to find the VIN in some old records, that may not happen, as the last time it was in the system may have been pre computer, and most states have not (and will not) enter in the old data from the Micro film, etc that it is stored on.

If he was trying to use some kind of search to prove that is a VIN number, I doubt any states DMV has all known VIN numbers, and what they are from all the was back to 1948 in its computer system!

In my experiance, I just tell them what I have, and what year it is, and they take my word.

I have had other peoplle in CA contact me about this sort of problem, and they have used my websites to show the folks at the DMV what the VIN breaks down as, and what the year etc is.

Let us know what he was trying to prove with his computer, maybe he is new and has not had to deal with old trucks yet.

Eric
