As Russ says the gas cap is the vent only holes in early series tank are for sending unit and fill tube later series has a vent (bypass)tube from tank to just infront of gas cap to relieve pressure in tank for filling.
When I had my wc 53 tank cleaned and lined I had them put in a bypass tube makes it a little easier to fill tank.
