dana 44 puzzler-1979 w-150 powerwagon

I just bought a 1979 w-150 powerwagon that has a dana 44 front axle. When I took the aftermarket rims and center cap off, I was staring at the spindle nut. As you can imagine it was pitted and rusted, but the question is what in the heck is supposed to be covering it? Are the supposed to be some kind of automatic hubs (it has the np203 full-time xfer case), or is there just supposed to be some kind of dust cap? To further confuse matters, I went to the dodge dealer, they dusted off the 79 manuals, and it doesn't show anything!!!!
