There's an older mechanic who lives near my place who has run his own shop for years. He works on all types of equipment, from passenger cars to log trucks. Problem is he doesn't have a piece of paper on the wall "certifying" him so the commissioners told me I can't take the fire department trucks to him anymore. He's been taking care of our stuff since at least the 1960s at about 3/4 the standard rate, and we've never had a problem with his work. You tell him what you think the problem is, drop it off, and when you get the call to pick the rig up it's fixed, and if he noticed anything else wrong with the truck that'll be fixed to.

But now we have to drive to the next little town to where there's a shop full of young "professionals." They're not bad kids and they know more than I do about trucks, but they just are not careful. You have to tell them what you want done, call up regularly to make sure it actually gets done, and then you have to go completely over the rig to make sure they actually did what you asked them to.
