Oh Man, you're not kidding...you should have seen the performance at the Dodge dealer when I was converting my 93 Cummins to 6 speed. They couldn't find the parts I wanted without the VIN number. I was trying to explain..."You don't understand, if I give you the 93 VIN number the parts will be applicable to a Getrag...I need 1999 & up 6 speed parts!" Nope, can't look them up without a VIN number.
Finally I got P'd off & went on Ebay, found a 2000 with a 6speed & copied down the VIN number listed in the auction, took the number to Dodge, no problem.
It's ridiculous.
I kept asking, don't you have a book or Microfiche I can look at? "No, not without a VIN number"
I agree...it's very, very annoying.
I'd sure hate to be a mechanic at one of those places or someone would get hurt if I had to put up with that nonsense 40hrs/week.
