If there has been any moisture (water) in the oil the filter could be lightly rusted to the can. Also just oil sludge can cause it to stick if it has been there for a long time. Slide a nylon or plastic spatula or plastic strip between the can and the filter to help loosen it. IT should pull out eith a little nudging.
