I used POR-15 Black Cote and a bit of their thinner on my truck. I did not spray it I used those foam brushes. Came out smooth and no brush strokes or bubbles. It took 2 coats to cover well and I used 2/3 of a quart to do the whole frame. It took me 2-3 hours total to do it all with 2 coats. First coat then the next day I did the second coat. Second coat when easier and smoother. Get a handful of those foam brushes they use for varnish the first coat tears them up. You could do your axle housing etc as well with it.
