Non- PW question but I need help

I need to solve a problem w/o taking engine apart.
History: 1990 Mazda PU B2200 w/2.2 eng. with
5-spd tranny, carb. feed, bought new and eng. maintained . The only exception is that after the first timing belt replacement, I failed to replace again at the proper intervals (60,000 mi.). It now has 207,000 mi. and did not smoke. It stopped 2 years ago. I was leaving home and powered out of the inclined drive w/o dumping clutch or barking tires when I heard and felt a slight
thump in the drivetrain at which the eng. did not seem to run quite as smooth and seemed to need to be kept at a higher rev. to have running power. At the end of the 10 mi. run to the parts store for oil and filter I was having to run in 3rd gear to pull even slight hills and at the parts store I planned to double clutch, downshift and whip into the parking lot as it was eveident the power was way-low but still no smoking eng. It would not restart but it would turn over with no problem.
When I got it home, I put the compression tester on and got between 28-31 psi on all 4 cyl. Had spark, had gas , no compression.
Now I figured it had just lost some teeth on the timing belt or had jumped time a couple notches but upon inspection, everything (seemed) to be right with the timing and the belt looked fine. It had been a great running dependable truck and I need to fix it.
Can anyone give me some other ideas as to what the problem might be? Could it have jumped time 180 degrees? I've heard all kinds of ideas as to what it might be but its hard to believe all my rings collapsed at once or all cyl. have a blown head gasket. Should I check for a broken O/H cam ?
No troubleshooting text even mentions my given situation. Thanks for any help,
