I just picked up a book on the Great Northern tracks over Stevens Pass. The pass was named for a GN engineer who found a low pass over the Cascades for GN. They actually ran trains over the pass when the current road goes. They had quites some switch backs and a horsshoe tunnel on the west side. Then the build the first tunnel under the pass then built the current tunnel in the late 20's. Originally they had the trains going forward and backwards up through a set of switchbacks on both sides of the pass. Kind of a neat little piece of history.
