I have always been confused on this subject. When I was a child, we were on one of the last party line phone systems here in Illinois. I have the old phone on display in my kitchen that I remember talking on when I was maybe 4 or 5 years old. It is an old wooden Monarch brand that you had to crank to connect to the operator, no dial or anything. Our phone number was "13 on 5". I have several of grandpa's advertising pencils that he gave out to promote his disc shapening business. That is how the phone number is listed: PHONE 13 on 5. I don't remember how many rings meant that a call was coming through to us, but I remember the phone ringing occasionally and being told that it was for somone else, a neighbor down the road. Sometimes Grandma would pick up and listen anyway, if she thought it was a life threatening situation, of course!
