Bob,

While I do know what a dial is, I have wondered about the old-style phone numbers.

The McKenzie family business' number was PHone HAstings 1089. How would one have dialed that in 1950?

I grew up with dials -- and I remember as a kid being able to dial just the last four to call my buddies (small-town SC in 1970s, early '80s). If I were in Hastings, say, 50 years ago, would I have just dialed the last 4 to get the McKenzie Barge & Derrick Co.? What if I were in the next town or the next county over? Would Marty have been tall enough to reach the phone?

Dave's number below -- AXe3-3464 (very cool for a treefarm/logging co.) -- looks like I would dial 2 for A and 9 for X, so the number would be 293-3464, correct?

Sorry to go off topic, but I have wondered about this.

Curious in Baghdad,
Chris
