They used this on 'This Old House" some time back. I have not seen this applied to automotive finishes.
It seems to come into its own on a cost basis when you're talking lead paint remediation on a commercial basis.
My friends in the business (oil field equipment refinishing FWIW) indicate that the way to go is methelene chloride and hp water spray (~1000 lb/sq in).
