If you dip/ wipe parts in phosphoric acid solutuions, it dissolves the rust and leaves a dark iron phosphate surface. Sold as 'metal etch'.If you dissolve some zinc in the solution before use, you have "Parkerizeing", a proprietary (patented, 1920's?) process that leaves a lighter color. For guns, you then oil and heat, leaving a greenish cast, ala Colt 1911A1 of WWII. I get my phosphoric acid solution in gallon jugs as "Lime Dissolver" from the big box store, $6/gallon. By the way, phosphoric acid is the ingredient in Coke that is responsible for the "disolves nails" myth, taste reminds me of some kind of candy, hasn't rotted any clothes yet.
