Many viri do not really manifest themselves as system crashers, they may do something as simple as make your mouse work funny, attach spy ware to your system or send out spam all day long from your computer that you yourself never notice or receive. They often make your system run slower, but sometimes they can be simply mining data from your system, looking for bank account numbers, social security numbers, passworks to on-line banking, or just using your e-mail for free advertising. Nearly all are the product of someone with too much time on their hands or a criminal. I bet he has plenty on his screen that he doesn't know about, = )
