If you used 2X lumber I don't think your tailgate would fit.
Not necessary anyway...have you ever tried to break a piece of 3/4" White Oak? Boy, It's strong stuff.
Take a drill & try to screw in a #12 wood screw without drilling a pilot hole...It'll break the screw!
