I could live with that. It seems to me that the main point of the building permit is so they can charge you for the permit and the assessor can tax you on whatever you built. Outside of big cities, anything that's built decently will pass inspection. I can accept the concept of extortion and taxation better than I can accept somebody telling me how I ought to build my own building, so if I could just pay the permit fee and the property tax and not have to deal with codes and inspections, I'd be satisfied. Isn't that how it is in most of the world; the way you get something approved is pay the guy that's doing the approving?
