pto fit

I got a winch and pto for my 56 ff the winch is an mu-2 the pto has the lever in the correct position but the gear on the pto barely contacts the tranny gear, the tranny is original (unsyncronized). sorry Im not a PW expert its my first try at rebuilding one. hope to get it roadworthy for iowa thanks for any help
