If the differential was not re-assembled with the pag seated on the stud and laying horizontal to the work surface, the pad most likely fell off the stud when they re-installed the carrier! Then it lay at the bottom untill you opened it!! An easy thing to overlook when assembling the third member!! There is enough room in the housing for the pad to lay without ever interfering with the gears!!
