I have owned many 318's and several have done what you have described. 160,000 or more and the timing chain would strech and they start this. Soon after it will skip some teeth and stop completely. Your timing can still look good. If not check out your accelerator pump in the carb.. Check out your vaccum advance on the dist. Have you checked the intake manifold for vaccum leaks, all the way around and at the carb. base? Have you checked your EGR valve.
