I have had several 200K mile engines that I have had mobile 1 in. I normally run a 5000-7000 mile oil change interval and have never had an internal engine problem. I use a K&N oil filter that from the information that I have found is about the best you can purchase. I also have my oil tested at every 3rd oil change (works out to about every 3-4 months) and again-never a problem. I also run synthetics in the transmission and differentials and again-never an issue with any of them.

In my opinion if you plan to change your oil at 3000 miles anyway it's foolish to use synthetic. However, if you run extended oil changes, which is just fine with synthetics, then the synthetics are the only way to go.
