I am not quite old enough to have driven class 8 trucks in the 50's but I drove a number of trucks from that era when I first started driving. Mostly Freightliners and Kenworths. As has already been stated none of them had front brakes back then. It was not until into the 70's that they became a requirement. I don't recall having any trouble stopping as long as they were adjusted properly.

The 262 was a good engine and could run pretty good when set up right. This may not be a concern to you but that looks like a B cab Mack and there is not a lot of room under the steering column to get in without banging the heck out of your knees. At least I could never get in one without cracking my knee cap pretty hard.
