Hi Steve! Hope your project is going well.
From what I know, those "curious marks" you are describing amount to a clock face indicating the time that the casting was made. If you look you will most likely find a month/ day/ year casting mark as well. The one that you describe indicates the time of day (or shift) that the casting was made. Maybe some of the other gurus here on the forum can confirm or deny this.
