Lately, even with all precautions, I have been getting nailed with 10's of instances of "gator" spybot tool. I manually torched it in my firewall settings, but I still have some cleanup to do.
1. Everyone should be updating their virus definitions at least weekly.
2. Everyone should have the latest system updates from microsoft
3. Everyone should be running a personal firewall, there are free ones out there.
4. Everyone should be running spybot removal tools monthly, also free on internet. Most people will find between 50 and 200 spybots on the first run of a removal tool.
5. Email addresses are often spoofed so the person you think is sending you the virus is very often Not the person you think it is.
6. Virus tools are not perfect, even with all of these precautions, you are still vuneralble, but to a lesser degree than someone who neglects one or more of these steps.
7. Do not open Any attachments unless you are sure of their origin.
8. I was going to say everyone should be running Solaris, but maybe that was a little overkill :-)
Dodge content - thanks Norm for the part numbers for the oil canister replacement. I printed it out so I would not lose it this time.
