I can only go from my experience but I've found vehicles with points to be extremely reliable. The biggest problem with these trucks is many of them have been sitting for 30+ years & then somebody gets them running & starts complaining of ignition problems when all they've done for maintenance is adjust points & clean the 35 year old spark plugs!
The first thing I do when I get a truck is rebuild the distributor, new points, condenser, rotor, cap, ignition wires, plugs, coil, battery, rebuild the generator, rebuild the starter, clean the gas tank rebuild the fuel pump & rebuild the carb.
Those are the minimum requirements if you expect your truck to run reliably.
If you don't mind being broken down on the side of the road, not all of this needs to be done but I don't like being broken down for any reason.
I have never ever had a 6V car or truck with points leave me stranded once this list has been looked after.
That's my experience anyway Dave!
