Marty is right on this. The only possiblilty I can come up with is that the engineers in those days believed the low-geared PWs would not travel down the road fast enough to cause any problems. But a u-joint is a lot like an egg beater when it is being rotated. Everything around it is flung out to the side. You need a lubricant that will return to the bearings in the u-joint instead of staying out in the twilight zone.
I bought this product at a CENEX store (CoOp). Should be stores in Oregon. There are in Idaho. Here is what the label says on the container. "EZ Flow Lithium Grease is recommended for track roller grease, drill discs, and most other applications where a semi fluid grease is preferred. Pumps readily in severe sub-zero temperatures." I have used this product for many years in my W300 and my F350. It does NOT leak out through the felt seals.
You could think about drilling the hole out larger and tapping it for a 1/2" or 5/8" plug. JH
