I felt bad about steering Paul down the grease path, with the Service Manual information. I spent the rest of my painful day searching for an answer. I learned that Short Fiber Grease, is now called lithium. Still probably too dense for long bearing life, why else would they tell us to go in "there" every two thousand miles or 300 hours? That would be every two weeks or sooner for some applications. The later manuals give the same service interval, but now say to use 140wt. MUCH more liquid. FYI, Dodge is now using 140wt synthetic gear lube, in all rear gear applications from 2002 and newer. However the Mopar product is $25 a pint.
