Hi Jerry, the W200 axle instructions are the same (Dana 44), so I assuming that this is the way it was done then, when they were still using whale oil and very grude blends as gear lube and not the modern blends. I would think that any modern lubricant that will stay in there and not leak out could probaby work, however I have heard of transfer case chattering problems with "new" tech fluids as well as shimmy issues when running the lighter oils in the front ends. Most of the lubricants specified in the old manual cannot be found at your local parts houses.
