Flathead Dodges are a little different than most other engines in the way the distributer sets up,and military and civilian must have their corrosponding oil pumps.Easy way to set up distributer is to turn motor over by hand, with #1 plug out. When you feel compression[you have a finger in the hole]turn motor till the timing mark is lined up on crank. This is #1 tdc.Set your dist in,where the rotor points is #1 rest of firing order follows. This method will get timing right on any motor[with a carb]as it dosent matter where #1 is on the cap.If you really want #1 to be where it hows in the manual, you must pull the oil pump and set it so #1 is where you want it.Hope this helps.
