Most require a rebore when the clearance goes beyond 3 thousandths of an inch. After this you start to get piston slap and oil consumption will rise. Race engines can be set up loose and run as much as 7 thousadth in clearance.
ME ? I push em till I can hear them rattle.I will admit to tossing a tail gate special together with as much as 20 thousand clearance.
It ran for 4 years and then I sold the thing it was not eating oil.
But nothing beats a tight balanced and blue printed motor. When done right, you will be impressed.
