When we moved to our new house last March, a lawn tractor was a requirement, and the first thing I bought. I didn't hesitate on which make. I went with a JD model L110. I was told by many that the automatic was the way to go. I wholeheartedly agree, and am glad I bought one. My next door neighbor had an older JD that was manual shift, and it took him a good while longer to cut his grass(same size yards) because he was constantly shifting up or down or into reverse, etc. With the auto, its just a matter of taking your foot off of one pedal and placing it on the other. Go with an automatic if you can afford it.

One word of advice, don't buy a JD from home depot, unless you have a truck and can take the tractor with you. I was going to buy mine from them and was told I would have to pay to have it delivered. I shopped around and found a local JD dealer. I bought the same model from them, at the exact same price, and delivery, plus a few little odds and ends(coupon for free tune up, and oil change) were free. Also, at HD you most likely have some kid setting the thing up and adjusting the deck, etc. This kid probably doesn't know too much about tractors. At the dealer the tractors are serviced by professionals who specialize in JD tractors.
