Mark; what you describe has been in use for many years. Vacuum, tubing, cordless drills, steam away's, nothing new. Even reverse osmosis has been around for many years. Taping the tree does produce a scar in the ares of the tap hole. You can not re-tap in that area as no sap will flow. But, taping Maples does no harm to the tree. Only very small producers still use buckets. You can get a yield of up to 50% by running tubing with vacuum. And, no....you dont suck the sap from the tree. A vacuum system must be tight, maintaining at least 18-21 hg over the entire system. The vacuum tricks the tree and it flows more sap.
