Maybe in California pole barn and post and beam is interchangable, but not here in the east. Here, a pole barn is like what Will built. If he had gone with post and beam, he would have needed an actual foundation, and then the post and beam structure would rest on the foundation and all of the components are joined with mortise and tenon joints and braces with mortised in diagonal braces, into a very strong yet flexible frame. The post and beam technology is hundreds of years old and basically unchanged today with the exception of the tools used to build them. I dont know when pole barns were started, but I would guess they were thought of as temporary structures.
