I am no fan of the Nanny State, but I can see that there are times when kids must be protected from stupid parents. I can remember bouncing around like a ping-pong ball when as a child, riding in cars not equipped with a seat belt, I was involved in two serious accidents. Yeh, it is a pain to buckle up my kids, but it doesn't take a degree in rocket science to understand that my kids would be in grave danger if not restrained. Still, I see stupid parents carrying children in their laps in cars - in front seats as well, where a deploying air bag could (it has happened!) easily decapitate the child in an instant.

Contrast this with motorcycle helmet laws for adults. My thought is: let them ride without a helmet if they want, but don't be asking me for tax money to pay for their treatment when they end up in a nursing home with head injuries. Live and let live!
