Well, the pros may disagree, but several guys on BE and a few here have interchanged them with no ill effects.
The VERY EARLY M37s came with WC transmissions, but I think that was less than 100 trucks and most, if not all, were long ago replaced by the early synchro (pre-NP420) transmission. I still see reports saying that the early M37 came with a non-synchro transmission, they're synchro in 3 and 4, maybe 2 also. There is a lot of difference between spur gears and helical cut.
