1. If you don't scrap the carbon off before you reassemble the head, the moisture that will have collected in the carbon will break it off. You run the risk of carbon getting between an exhaust value and seat, bending the valve. SCRAP IT OFF!!!!!

2. With the piston at TDC, force some grease around the piston, down between it and the cylinder wall before you start scrapping. This will prevent carbon from getting between the piston and wall. Turn the engine to clean the grease and carbon off the cylinder.

3. If the carb's float is correctly set, the buildup can be from how your driving the truck. Short stop and go doesn't give the engine time to burn off the carbon accumulation from cold starts. The engine ventilation system can also be impacting this some. Take it for a 30 mile drive now and then at 45mph to burn out the carbon.
