In my personal opinion there is nothing to be done, the costs of getting your money back by any legal means will be more then the $500 you lost.
If it was $5,000 then I would say you have a good chance of getting some back in a fight, but given the distance even small claims court is overly expensive.
Complain a bit more, maybe write a letter, but otherwise don't worry about it, and check better next time.
