FWIW: The early series transmissions in the M37 also are synchro between 3 and 4 just like the later series ones in the M37B1. The cases are a little different (fill plug is in a different location, the input bearing retainer nut is left hand thread on one but right hand on the other, the shift fork for reverse is diffenent (comes down from the top in one, up in the other) so you can't swap the shift tower from one to the other...
The gear angle is differnt, so you are supposed to use a different PTO, but they are close enough that folks have mounted the same PTO without reported problems...
Ideally, the PTO should match the transmission (early/late).
I've got both the early and late style transmissions sitting in my basement shop...
