This came up a while back. I think the answer is, with parallel parking the drivers door always opened into traffic. To get away from that, it was assumed that the driver would slide across the seat exiting on the passenger side. He or she would then lock that door with the key. Then when they came back, instead of walking and opening the drivers door into traffic, they would be safely on the curb side. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.
