If it was indeed an m43 ambulance then most often the body was cut off just behind the doors so as to make a very useful but ugly truck. In this case the rear of the "cab" was open or closed off in a "custom" manner. A flat bed could be fabricated easily depending on what the job ahead was. It is possible it could be a lwb truck with a flat bed? Some regular m37's often had thier frames extended, once in civilian use, to allow for a larger bed area.
Mostly likely an ambulance cut with a torch.
