The truck I got had no inner cable at all. The outer housing was also gone except for about 1 foot on the transmission and 1 foot hanging on the back of the speedometer.
I was at the Carlisle flea market and a guy selling dodge parts had NOS inner cores for sale. I bought one for $5.00. (At the time I did not have a VPW catalog or a Roberts catalog and didn't know the complete cable assemblies were available.
I went to the local hardware store and got a piece of semi-rigid plastic tubing that was just big enough to slip over the ends of the outer housing. I clamped it in place with gas line hose clamps and the speedometer has worked fine ever since.
