It occurs to me that the main thing I like about a truck (opinion already!) is overkill. I want something that will take whatever mission I come up with in stride. Reliable, and big enough for the job. The brand doesn't matter much, then, does it? If I want to get out in the woods and not get stuck, maybe a little Jeep is enough. If I want to haul firewood, then I need a big truck. For an expedition, I think the Power Wagon is great. The winch sure comes in handy. Although mine is not as reliable as I would like yet, that is mostly a matter of money and time.
And I would never buy a new vehicle. I'm glad someone out there has the dough to buy the truck I will eventually own. Besides the big bucks, I just don't want to have to bring up some new vehicle, finding out all the little bugs, etc. for the dealer to deal with. A used rig has the bugs worked out more, and if it's older, I have a chance at being able to fix things myself.
Give me a truck that has some design for maintenance, that is more truck than I really need for a job (over getting great mileage), that has a few dings and dents so I don't have to freak out when I add one, and has some personality born of function plus aesthetics. From there you then naturally get into the numbers of capacity, power, etc. to make your choice. After that, it's down to what is available, what you find in time to get a good deal.
