If I Had known what I know now back in 95 I would have bought a 3/4 or 1 ton with a diesel. In 95 I had no idea that I would be towing cars to shows. I also didnt know I would be towing a John Deere tractor in the summertime mowing fields. I have since got the 74 D200 440 to do my pulling.

Do I NEED a diesel?

I dont know.......and thats what I think was the core of Martys original post is cost vs. need of the diesel.

In the summertime maybe. The 440 pulls just fine but sucks down the fuel. From September to the end of May theres not much pulling that goes on for me.

I've looked at diesels the last few months. Would really like to get a new truck but I look at other things..

My 95 I bought new. It isnt worth jack now as a trade in or to sell outright. I know the truck and its a good truck. Why get rid of it? Its worth more to me now to keep around and drive.

The 74 D200 isnt worth jack either. No one wants an old 70's Dodge truck. Its probably not worth much over 500$ unless I put in my time and trouble then its worth 33252$ ;)
Its a heavy duty SOB and will pull with the best of them. You cant scratch or ding and dent it anymore. And I pull maybe 2-3 days a week in the summer time. Do I really want to get into a nice shiny new 1ton diesel with a price tag of 35000$ all sweating and stinky and dirty??!?!

I probably spend 100$ a month in the summertime for gas to haul the tractor. Thats 300$ a summer. It would take the Cummins a long time to pay for the fuel savings not to mention the added cost of diesel upkeep to justify a diesel for me.
