the reference to the 2 part (Firestone) wheel as the widow maker was probably one person's opinion
most multi piece wheels could / may / do have that knick name
most of the problems come from damaged wheels
being worked on by untrained personnel or without the use of proper safety equipment
the wheel you have on your 48 is a military style or combat wheel and like your truck is over 50 years old so it is not strange that most tire shops have never seen or worked on or would want to work on one.
you need to go to a TRUCK/OTR/FARM tire shop for truck tire work and or questions and not a soccer mom tire store.
your wheel might be unsafe for anyone to work on if the bolts are rusty/damaged or if the wheel is not assembled according the factory manual and the nuts torqued down to the correct setting.
