Since you have no virus protection or no firewall, how do you know that you don't have viruses/trojans/malware on your computer? Attachments are not the only method of gaining access to a computer-my Panda software goes off a couple times a week when I hit websites with the bytefly trojan.
If your computer has high speed Internet access, then one of the most common hacks is to turn it into a "zombie" or mail relay so it pumps out spam-you'll never know it is happening unless you are monitoring TCP/IP packets or have the appropriate software installed.
You are correct that a 12 year old hacker may not want access to the data in your computer but your computer can be mighty useful as a tool to do damage to the rest of us.
