If you go with solenoids, make sure they're rated for continuous duty. Starter solenoids generally aren't and will burn up if left on continuously for more than a minute or so. As a low-budget expedient, I'd be tempted to use a big old open-frame "Frankenstein"-style double-pole double-throw knife switch since it's dead simple, they're easy to scrounge, and the voltage is low enough that touching the exposed parts won't shock anybody. These switches used to be used for reversing big motors in factories in the old days. You need a switch that's good for 100 amps or so. The only risk is that some tool or other piece of metal might fall across the bare parts and create some unexpected arc welding.
