What Driving Lights on your Tow Vehicle

I bougth a set of PIAA 520, 6 inch, 85 watt, Crystal Ion driving lights. They are susposed to illuminate way beyond your normal high beams. I went out on the black road tonight, hand held the lights at bumper level for a test. The Crystal Ion light is yellow in color and does light up well but not way past the normal high beams. its a fan shape pattern. At approx 500 feet the fan lights a country road width. I never had high tech driving lights before. Is this the best they will do ? For $250 I would expect to have two real beams of light way down the road. I can go no larger than 6 inch so they will fit in my new front bumper. What are you using to see way out ?
